Our very first attempt at this new thing dubbed “Erie Beer Society” took place on December 17, 2009 at
The Sandbar on West 8th Street. If I recall, about 35 people showed up, which far exceeded the whopping 13 that RSVP’d. We knew we were on to something the next month when we literally packed U Pick 6 on upper Peach Street.

Erie Beer Society has featured 54 meetings in total (counting this month’s at Calamari’s) and a handful of other events taking place at Seawolves games, Otters games and even some American Craft Beer Week sampling events. As of today, there are 2,343 “beerthusiasts” signed up on eriebeersociety.com, a testament to the popularity of craft beer in this region.

So now what?

Well, we need a little bit of your help. Don’t worry; it’s not much at all. A membership fee will be $12.00 per year, that’s only $1.00 per month so you can keep coming to each meeting and trying the different beers each time. $12.00 a year. That’s it.

June’s meeting will be like it’s been for the past 4+ years, but starting with July’s meeting at a location TBD, we’d like your help to keep trying new and different beers. More information on signing up will be available soon!

May the beer be with you,

I should state right out of the chute, this was my first meeting of the EBS. I walked in not knowing what to expect or even what the meetings were about. I "did" have my own agenda in mind and that was to meet others that had experience in home brewing or knew people that did.

Now regarding the beers that were sampled: truthfully the first beer was not something i would seek out (this is only because i tend towards IPA's and Stouts...) i did enjoy it but i don't think it would be a regular stock in my frig. The second beer (the cloudy one) was quite pleasant. I liked the hint of lemon (citrus) and the little "bite" it had. That was more towards my liking, and i would definitely stock up on it.

I have say it was A GREAT TIME! And a big "Thank You" to the people i met, i got so much information, and i want to give a special shout out to the member that bought me a Yuengling at the end, I owe you one! All in all i look forward to the next meeting!!

Last night was our first ever Erie Beer Society field trip - to the Erie Otters game against the Saginaw Spirit. For our little group, which isn't so little anymore at over 1,600 members, this was a first - a group outing somewhere outside of the usual monthly meeting.

Here was the deal, for ten bucks you got a game ticket, beer and some food. The unconfirmed attendance was around 200 people I believe, which was phenomenal. The hockey game turned out to be pretty suspenseful too, ending in a shoot-out (in Saginaw's favor, unfortunately).

So, we're working on planning another similar event at a different venue. Same concept, different venue.

Oh and by the way, if anyone has any photos from last night, could you post them on the site? Or email them to me: jmccullor@goerie.com.

Its been a wild summer for us and with fall just around the corner, we thought a list of summer's great area beer festivals would be useful for everyone. It wouldn't be hard to attend a fest every weekend between Erie, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Buffalo.

So, what fun fests have you attended this summer? Post your photos and comments!

I went (and poured some Rye PA) and I thought it was a great event. The BrewErie at Union Station was PACKED with beer enthusiasts.
For all those who attended our meeting at Skeeter's last night, thanks! As I circulated around I heard good things about the beer and the venue.

Demo, from Magic Hat Brewing Co., was our first Black IPA we've sampled (also known as Cascadian Dark Ale in some circles) and I think it was very well-received.

Do you have any suggestions on where we should go next month? We've bounced around Erie pretty well so far but we are always looking for a new place to visit and try some great beer.

Also to note, check out the Events page for some upcoming beer events you won't want to miss. We didn't have any t-shirts last night but you can buy them and other items from our online store.
EBS Member, Ray Barber, Featured in Lake Erie Lifestyletag:eriebeersociety.ning.com,2012-01-30:4473086:BlogPost:293982012-01-30T14:00:00.000ZJeff McCullorhttps://eriebeersociety.ning.com/profile/JeffMcCullor

If you've had the joy of talking with Ray at any of our meetings you're aware he knows historical local beer history and brewerania.

In fact, the article describes how Ray had to build an addition on his garage to house more than 1,000 items. Rare items include the original document illustrating the consolidation of Eagle Brewery, the Fred Koehler Brewery and the Conrad and Cascade breweries to form Erie Brewing Company. Ray is full of some really great local history and continues to build his collection. In fact I have given him quite a few EBS-related items from our monthly meetings.

Ray has been a very regular member of our little society (now 1,177 members!), attending nearly every meeting and talking about some of his brewery tours across the country. He's a great part of our organization, so look for the white Koehler hat at the next meeting and say hi to Ray!
